My name is Skip Stephenson and I have been building and remodeling for 26 years, 10 of that in strictly kitchen and bath renovation. I have found that I enjoy remodeling kitchens the best because they are the most useful and aesthetic room in a house. Kitchens renovations are complex enough and styles change quick enough to keep them interesting.
This Kitchen Ideas guide will give design, and remodeling ideas in the areas of design, rough plumbing and electrical, to the cabinet and appliance installation. We will also cover how to choose the best cabinets, countertops, lighting ideas, plumbing, appliances, and flooring for your dream kitchen. This is a real guide with more detailed information, and ideas than is usually found in any book, or how to web site about kitchen remodeling.
For "how to" questions please visit the Kitchen Remodel FORUM, for the weekly articles on current kitchen related topics visit the BLOG, and for great kitchen idea pictures visit the Gallery.
Any kitchen remodel before the designing starts a budget has to be put together for a kitchen that fits in your house as far as cost. Too much kitchen is easy to do. For some budget guidelines visit the budget page. If you are on a tight budget, and want a little more than your bank account is allowing visit the page Saving Money Kitchen Remodeling.
After Budgeting the design process begins. See Kitchen Remodeling Ideas for finding places for ideas, and inspiration. The Kitchen picture gallery has some beautiful pictures to help the design process.
Under Design Categories, the Kitchen Design Guidelines article is about the function aspects of a design as far as things like appliance location, and space between islands and cabinets. The Kitchen Style Ideas article can help with some style types and directions.
The nuts and bolts of putting a kitchen design plan on paper starts with the cabinet and appliance layout. The Cabinet Design Layout page goes into the different sizes for cabinets and how to start deciding where they go.
The Kitchen Island Ideas page, and the Backsplash Idea Pictures page has lots of pictures for design help in those areas.
Once the design process is done and there is a very detailed kitchen design plan with the cabinet layout, the appliance locations, the plumbing locations, and the lighting locations, then it is time to get the hands dirty with some demo. There is no how to demo a kitchen article because it's pretty much self explanatory.
After demo and everything is out of the kitchen it's time to start the Rough Plumbing and Rough Electrical for a contemporary code complying remodel. Make sure you know exactly where all the fixtures are located from your design plan. Have the appliance specs ready for the specific appliances so you know what wire size to use, and what rough plumbing is needed. Even under counter ice makers need their own plumbing drain.
When it comes time to start installing cabinets please visit our sister web site How To Install Cabinets. This web site is a very detailed guide on how to go about installing cabinets.
The rest of the pages on this web site have to do with how to choose the best material and fixture types. The Cabinet Quality Guide shows how to choose the best cabinets. The Countertop Material Idea page goes into choosing the best type of countertops. The Kitchen Flooring Idea article is of course about flooring. I have a separate very detailed web site dedicated to Kitchen Lighting ideas to help design and install lighting. Installing Under cabinet Lights is a page at the kitchen lighting idea web site. The Best Kitchen Sink article helps in choosing the best type of sink material. The Appliance Guides give installation and quality tips for the individual appliances: Refrigerator Guide, Dishwasher guide, Range Guide, and Hood Vent Guide. Lastly the kitchen knobs and Pulls gives some installation tips for knobs.
I hope this free online kitchen Ideas guide provides some good kitchen remodeling ideas that inspire you to design, and/or remodel a kitchen yourself, or a least educates you enough to help in the decision making process. It pays to have a general how to knowledge about kitchen remodeling to know if your contractor is doing a good job, or not.
